Getting ready for a few tips? Make sure you are organized and ready to go so that everything gets done as seamlessly as possible. Below are some Moving Tips from Willis Allen Real Estate.

Renting a Moving Truck:

Make sure you chose your company carefully. Ask the following questions to aid in your decision.

• How many trucks/trailers do you have?
• How old are your vehicles?
• Does the truck have an automatic or manual transmission?
• Is the cab air-conditioned?
• How many adults can ride comfortably?
• How many miles to the gallon will the truck get when it is fully loaded?
• What happens if the truck breaks down? Is there road service and who pays for it?
• Does the truck have a hydraulic lift or ramp?
• Does the truck include a spare tire and emergency flares?
• Are there mileage charges or drop-off fees on the vehicle?

Supplies for Packing:

• Strong packing boxes
• Bubble wrap for packing fragile items
• Tissue and ink-free packing paper
• Scissors
• Several broad-tip markers to label boxes
• Rolls of packing tape 

Packing Tips:

• Get more boxes than you think you will need
• Get smaller boxes for books. Use bigger boxes for lighter items
• Pack room-by-room, keeping similar items together
• Reinforce the bottom of boxes with at least one strip of packing tape
• Pack boxes firmly to prevent the contents from shifting during your move
• Use crumpled paper as padding. Seal boxes tightly with wide packing tape
• Pack records and CDs vertically in boxes. Don't stack them flat
• Place heavier items in the bottom of the box and lighter items on top
• Separate items with paper to prevent scratches caused by rubbing
• Remove lids from jars and ceramics. Wrap each separately
• Seal any open boxes and bottles before packing them to avoid spills and leaks
• Use towels, linens, curtains, etc. to pad boxes of fragile items. Clearly mark these boxes "FRAGILE"
• Use jumbo box for lampshades and cushion them well
• When disassembling furniture, beds, lamps, tec. put the hardware into a plastic bag along with any assembly tips and tape it onto the item itself
• If possible, ask your mover if you can leave clothes in dresser drawers. Find out from your movers how they want hanging clothes packed
• Make a master list of all household items and your belongings
• Number boxes when they are packed and sealed. Clearly indicate on the box its room destination. Write on the master list the contents of the numbered boxes
• Make a box of essentials and label it "Open Me First." Put this box to the side to be loaded last (so its unloaded first) or move it yourself
• Your Essentials Box may include: Basic tools such as a flashlight, hammer, nails, tape, etc. or Bathroom essentials such as hand towels, soap, toilet paper, etc.
• Kitchen goodies such as paper towels, coffee maker and filters, paper plates and cups, plastic utensils, dish detergent, a sponge, pet food, dishes and trashes bags
• Pack rugs last so they can be the first items unloaded and placed at your new location

Cleaning Appliances for Moving Day:

• Clean your appliances early for a more pleasant and odor-free move
• Defrost your refrigerator and freezer, propping doors open. Afterward, place an open box of baking soda inside each for a fresh aroma 
• Clean your oven and range. Use a powerful scrubbing agent and brush
• Drain your washing machine
• Place a nylon stocking filled with baking soda or a few pieces of charcoal inside your washer to prevent mildew. Tape the hoses and cords to the back of the machine
• Clean your dishwasher and remove any leftover soap
• Cut a lemon into pieces and grind it into the garbage disposal to eliminate odors
• Remember to dry interiors of all appliances to prevent mildew

​With it finally starting to feel like winter in Colorado, it is important to make sure you keep your house warm without spending all your money. That way, you can spend less money on energy and more money on those holiday presents!

Prep Your Windows

Make sure to block any cold air from getting in. All windows should be tightly sealed by having a waterproof seal on the outside and a gentle silicon caulk on the inside. This won't damage your paint, but will keep warm air in and cold air out during the cold months. Just because windows are closed, however, doesn't mean your blinds have to be. Opening the blinds and letting the sun in during the day will produce natural warmth in your home. During the evening, keep in all that warmth you let in during the day by closing your blinds again and, therefore, creating a layer of insulation. 

Let Your Inner Decorator Free

Just like blinds adding insulation to your windows, decorating can be a natural insulator for you walls, floors and bodies! Bookshelves, picture frame, mirrors or other decor for your walls create an extra layer to make sure heat doesn't escape from your walls. This goes for floors as well. Rugs are a great way, not only to spice up the look of your home, but to insulate your floors. So, have fun and let the interior decorator in you go crazy! And, finally, when decorating, don't forget to cozy up. Investing in some warm throws like flannel or fleece blankets, will keep you and your family warm. 

Insulation

Everyone should invest in insulation! This can be a big investment, but once done, you will start making your money back quickly with a lower energy bill. Insulation should be installed in the attic, your pipes and also in your ducts. Insulating your pipes will ensure that water won't burst the pipes in sub-freezing weather. This will also protect your home from mold issues in the future. If your ducts are clean, your heating system will work more efficiently and get warm air throughout your house faster. This can also apply to air filters. New air filters is a good thing to get a few times a year. The cleaner they are, the more efficiently they will work and, again, you will be saving more money in the long run. If your filter is clean, the heater can do its job more efficiently and for a longer time. You can either buy new filters or simply vacuum the filters out.

The Clockwise Rule

Circulating warm air is another good rule of thumb. In the winter, you want to circulate cool air and in the winter, redirecting your ceiling fan to rotate clockwise will push the warm air back down into the main room. It is also a good idea to make sure heat is getting to the spaces you are actually utilizing. So, if you aren't using a room in the winter, close off those doors and vents. This is definitely a money saver!

Holiday Cookies

Getting cozy is an old school, but productive way to keep your energy bill down. Cooking soups or baking cookies is always more fun in the winter, so utilize heat from the stove or oven to your advantage. When using these utilities, your home will naturally heat up, so try turning down the thermostat at this time.

Tis' the season for community gatherings, hot chocolate and extravagant light displays and celebrations.

Boulder:
Join Boulder residents and visitors in the Lights of December Parade this Saturday, December 3rd at 6 pm. 

Floats from local businesses, churches, groups and more will take stage in downtown Boulder. For an extra festive environment and your personal entertainment, also enjoy marching bands and holiday carolers. Stick around for the grand finale which will feature Santa Claus!

To help figure out where to set up, keep in mind that the parade starts at 15th and Walnut. It will then go down Broadway and circle back on Spruce. 


Louisville:
Welcome in the holidays and join the Louisville community in Historic Downtown Louisville Friday, Dec. 2 from 5 - 9 pm for holiday specials! Starting at 5 pm, the art walk will begin. At 5:30, visit Santa Claus in front of the Chamber, take your kids to the petting zoo hosted by Louisville Realty, and enjoy a living nativity, local choirs and more! 

The parade will begin at 7 pm and hot chocolate and special deals and savings will be offered at local retailers after the parade at 9 pm.
